The patron Saint of Pollica.
Ceremonies celebrating the local patron Saint are a very important part of Southern Italian culture. Everybody will know the date of many of the Saint’s Days and there will be typical local celebrations centered around the church and a procession, sometimes with a band and a party. In Pollica, the patron Saint is San Nicola celebrated on the 6th December, and the celebrations centre around the statue of the Saint. A church service is followed by a procession through the streets. Men from the village carry the statue of the Saint on a sedan through the town. Patron Saints are a very important part of local tradition and San Nicola is very much loved by the people of Pollica.
